Frequent Cremation Questions

What is a simple or direct cremation?

A simple (or direct) cremation is the most straightforward cremation option. It involves the respectful cremation of your loved one without a formal viewing, service, or ceremony beforehand. It's an affordable choice that still allows families to honor their loved one in their own personal way.

Can I still have a service or celebration of life later?

Absolutely. Many families who choose simple cremation hold a memorial service, scattering ceremony, or gathering at a later date. Our focus is on providing the cremation itself, but we’re happy to recommend local partners who can help with planning a personalized remembrance.

What do I need to get started with a simple cremation?

To begin the process, we’ll need some basic information about your loved one, along with a signed cremation authorization form from the legal next of kin. From there, we handle most of the rest, keeping things as simple and stress-free as possible for you. You can start the process online or by giving us a call.

How soon can cremation take place?

Maine law requires a 48-hour waiting period after death before cremation can occur. In addition, we must receive a cremation authorization form signed by the legal next of kin. Contact us for more information.

Why do I need to fill out forms for cremation?

Cremation is a permanent process, so legal authorization is required. Forms ensure we have the proper consent from the next of kin, as well as the necessary personal and medical information to secure permits and comply with Maine state laws. We guide you through each step so it’s as simple and stress-free as possible.

Why choose to arrange cremation online?

Arranging online allows you to move at your own pace, in the privacy of your home, without the pressure of being in person. It’s convenient and designed to offer the same respectful service you’d receive in person.

Can I plan a cremation in advance?

Yes, planning ahead is a thoughtful way to ease the burden on your loved ones later. Pre-planning allows you to make important decisions in advance, lock in today’s pricing, and ensure your wishes are clearly documented. You can begin the process online whenever you're ready with our online form.

How long does the cremation process take from start to finish?

The entire process typically takes 7 to 10 business days, depending on when we receive the required paperwork and how quickly we can obtain state and medical examiner approvals. We’ll keep you informed at every step and do our best to ensure everything is handled smoothly and in a timely manner.
